We have personally witnessed a number of clients receiving calls from scam organizations claiming to be Microsoft desktop help in regards to user’s computers being infected. Typically the computer user gets an unsolicited call indicating that Microsoft has detected virus activity on the user’s computer. They are taking advantage of services such as Lotus V-CIO that actually do monitor for virus activity on monitored computers covered by a Lotus maintenance plan.
The latest scam involves Netflix. The scam follows…
- You will receive an email indicating there is an issue with your Netflix account.
- When you click the link you are taken to a fake Netflix login screen.
- After you log into your account you receive a warning that your Netflix account is locked and you need to call Netflix customer service.
- The operator will indicate that virus activity has been detected on your computer.
- The operator will then transfer you to a technician who will access your computer and run fake scans.
- They will then offer to clean up your computer for nearly $400.
