A common question now is “how do I print from my iPhone or iPad?” The answer would depend on your printer and some other factors.
The first requirement is a wireless network. Confirm that you have a wireless network and that your iPhone or iPad is connected to your wireless network. Your printer also needs to be network enabled whether it is wired or wireless. A printer just shared through your computer to the network will not function with your tablet or smartphone.
Your next requirement is to have an Apple product capable of AirPrint. The list includes…
- iPad (all models)
- iPhone (3GS or later)
- iPod touch (3rd generation or later)
That last requirement is a printer that is equiped with AirPrint. A complete list of printers is available at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356.
If that last requirement is a problem. Don’t throw out that printer and run to your local retailer just yet. Fortunately there are solutions. One of the latest and most cost effective solutions is from Lantronix. We have used Lantronix servers for years to interface network connections to legacy RS-232 ports in alarm systems and industrial equipment.
Their latest product line is xPrintServer. It will add AirPrint to more than 4000 models of USB and network enabled printers. They offer 2 models aimed at the home and business markets. The cost starts at a surprising $100 for the home model and $200 for the business class unit.
Another great benefit is that these print servers will place your USB printer on your network. This will allow you to print from any wired or wireless computer on your network.
